AI: risk or opportunity?

The Chinese word for “crisis” combines two concepts: danger and opportunity. “It is a concept that feels extremely current,” observes Maria Rosaria Lenzi, financial consultant at Fideuram – Intesa San Paolo Private Banking, “especially when we speak about artificial intelligence, a delicate subject, yet also a concrete opportunity for improvement.”
AI is already significantly reshaping multiple industries, and financial advisory is no exception. For the private banker, it represents a valuable support tool in terms of efficiency: routine tasks can be performed with greater speed and precision. “This allows us to dedicate more time to the client relationship, which remains the true core of our work,” Lenzi explains. However, along with benefits come potential risks. The first concerns financial markets. The accelerated circulation of information can amplify speculative dynamics. “The danger lies in the formation of new bubbles,” Lenzi warns, recalling events like 1995, peaking between 2000 and 2002, when the dot-com surge led to valuations disconnected from real fundamentals, followed by abrupt and widespread crashes.
A second critical aspect primarily affects younger generations, who may be tempted by a do-it-yourself approach. AI-driven tools can create the illusion of autonomous wealth management, promoting trends and fashionable themes within an ever-faster information cycle. In this generational dialogue, Lenzi is joined by Michele Dal Poggetto, a young, skilled private banker who understands the language and expectations of younger investors.
Relying on a financial advisory professional remains, ultimately, a matter of balance. A wealth advisor has access to dedicated analytical structures and a comprehensive view that enables long-term investment decisions, taking into account not only market conditions but also the evolution of professional paths and family dynamics.
