A tiny golden sphere, smooth, perfect, shimmering. The symbol chosen by sculptor Andrea Roggi to represent the Energia della Vita. Despite its small size, it dominates the window of the gallery opened by Roggi in the historic center of Pietrasanta, and it appears in all of the artist’s exhibitions. For instance, in Matera, in one of his most intriguing installations: from the center of an octagonal wooden “room” in the Chiesa del Purgatorio, the light radiated by the sphere illuminates the surrounding sculptures.

“Generally speaking, my sculpture is baroque, not inclined toward synthesis,” Roggi muses. “But Energia della Vita, instead, attempts synthesis in the extreme. The sphere is the most essential form there is. And for me it is a concrete, highly personal reminder of the origin of life, of when I saw the first ultrasound images of my sons, Elia and Giacomo: they were just tiny points on a screen but they represented all the world’s vital force, all the energy of life.”

Years later, father and son have found themselves collaborators in art. One topical example is Roggi’s exhibition at Florence’s Accademia dei Georgofili where, for the first time, he recounted the genesis of his works, from conception to realization, and did so in part by way of Giacomo’s expressive fine art photos.

From Matera to Florence, by way of Viareggio, then on to Cannes. The occasions for Roggi to exhibit his sculptures, from the smallest to the monumental, have multiplied in the last few months. This summer’s program includes a show in Venice, with five large pieces around the city in some of its most evocative locations, including Campo San Vio, the island of San Giorgio, and the Arsenal. 
But whenever possible, Andrea and his family return to Versilia, to Pietrasanta, a city with a special vocation for art, the adoptive city of many sculptors.
