sculpture, from the classic to the modern

Marbleworking is a jewel of Versilia’s economy. Today, its quarries and workshops, which for centuries have attracted artists from all over the world, are facing pivotal transformations with technologies such as robotics. Massimo Galleni is a sculptor with upwards of forty years’ experience whose studio, at the gates of Pietrasanta, produces classical and contemporary sculpture in white and polychrome marble as well architectural pieces and decorating complements – for homes, villas, and gardens, for public and private clients in Italy and abroad. And he is a witness to this change. “Robots are useful auxiliaries, but to use them well one must possess a thorough knowledge of traditional sculpting,” Galleni explains. “We exploit technology to limit fatigue, but the frontline resource for myself and for my assistants – all of whom have classical training – is our manual skill.” That this is the right approach has been confirmed time and time again by great artists such as Giuliano Vangi, Igor Mitoraj, Rabarama, and by many sculptors of the new generations.
